Weight Loss Without Frailty: Optimizing Muscle and Function in Older Adults
Dennis T. Villareal, MD
Professor of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine
Dennis T. Villareal, MD, is Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and a geriatrician and endocrinologist whose research focuses on weight management, frailty, and sarcopenia in older adults. His work centers on optimizing body composition, physical function, and metabolic health in aging populations, with particular emphasis on interventions that promote healthy longevity.
Dr. Villareal has led multiple federally funded clinical trials evaluating lifestyle interventions, including diet and exercise, as well as pharmacologic strategies, to improve muscle mass, strength, physical performance, and metabolic outcomes in older adults with obesity. His research has contributed to evolving clinical approaches to weight loss in later life by demonstrating that intentional weight reduction, when appropriately designed, can improve function and quality of life while preserving muscle and skeletal health.
He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and is a frequent invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Villareal has also served on advisory panels, data and safety monitoring boards, and scientific review committees focused on aging and metabolic research.
His current work continues to explore lifestyle and metabolic interventions aimed at reducing frailty and maintaining functional independence in older adults.
